A Macbook Air from 2020 arrived at the workshop, after an update the computer was stuck on the updating screen. The data was not backed up and was very important. We recovered the files/data. We confirmed the issue was stuck MacBook update and our technicians fixed the laptop and made sure all the files were recovered.

How we fixed a stuck Macbook update

Our technicians then followed the steps to repair the installation of Mac OS Big Sur that was causing the issue. The files were 100% safe and securely recovered. We went ahead by upgrading the Macbook to the latest Apple operating system. Now the Macbook was as good as new, it was faster than ever and ready for anything. All there is left to do now is replace the files on the now refurbished computer.

Following Apple’s instructions, our computer technicians used Apple Migration Assistant to recover all the files from the external drive. This way the computer would have all important documents exactly as they were before the Macbook had any issues. Unfortunately, things were not so simple. During the recovery process, the Macbook crashed due to a software error, thankfully due to our precautions all files were completely unharmed.

Our technician contacted Apple on the customer’s behalf. Dealing with manufacturers can be a difficult and stressful process so we like to take the hassle out of that experience for our customers. Noah came by the workshop with his daughter’s school laptop, due to an accident it was completely out of shape. Now our technicians the new computer it was a simple matter of configuring the machine just how it was before. Using the backup we made we were able to restore everything from the old computer to the new one. When a computer reads data from a hard drive it uses technology similar to any record, CD or DVD player. It is limited by the rotation speed of the platters to read and write from the disc that is spinning. Due to this moving part it uses a large amount of power and is fragile to shocks. One way that hard drives have improved over time is by increasing the RPM they spin at, a standard drive will run at 5400RPM, some hard drives will be labelled as “green” or “power saving” meaning that they operate at a lower RPM.

A solid state drive uses circuitry to store data and is has no moving parts. As it has no moving parts and doesn’t require a spinning disc it is less fragile to shocks. While an SSD upgrade doesn’t improve the clock speed of a computer, it means that the data can be read more rapidly allowing shorter boot, program and application launch times. An average improvement is about 1000% increase in speed of reading.

The upgrade for the laptop brought in was successful and the user’s data was migrated to the new drive. The laptop is faster than it was out of the shop, but set up how the user likes it.
